The #1 most important Rule of any eclipse is to protect your eyes. Sunglasses will not protect your eyes!
Brāhma siddhānta recommends looking at an eclipse through a curtain, cloth or through the reflection in a dish of oil or water. A pregnant women should not see such views unless viewed through a curtain or cloth – Śikṣāpātrī Bhāṣya

The last time a solar eclipse crossed a similar path over the United States was on June 8, 1918. World War I was in full swing and up to 10,000 soldiers were being shipped away everyday to fight in Europe and the Middle East. Within 3 months the Spanish Flu pandemic began infecting hundreds of thousands across the United States eventually killing over 550,000 Americans and ultimately infecting millions. The Spanish flu officially became a pandemic in the United States the same month as the eclipse in 1918.
It is interesting to note the parallels between the two eclipses a century apart as they relate to censorship and freedom of speech.
Just 3 weeks before the eclipse in 1918, congress passed The Sedition Act of 1918.
The Sedition Act extended the Espionage act of 1917 to limit freedom of speech. Any opinions expressed in public or written articles criticizing the war effort or the administration in power basically became illegal. Though the Sedition Act was passed by congress, over the course of the next year the Supreme Court upheld at least 3 convictions that curtailed free speech based on the Espionage and Sedition act.
Ninety-nine years later, there is serious discussion by the current administration to enact legislation to criminalize certain forms of freedom of speech, especially as it pertains to protesting and journalism.
Just a week after the eclipse of June 8, 1918, Eugene Debs was convicted and jailed for a speech criticizing America’s entry into World War I. He had received 6% of the popular vote in the 1912 presidential race. In 2017, several individuals who protested the inauguration have been given prison sentences as long as 4 months. Closed door White House meetings shutting out the Press has become the norm.
In 2017, not nearly as many soldiers are being shipped off to war as were in 1918, but the U.S. is still embroiled in dangerous conflicts all over the globe.

Other notable events after the eclipse of 1918 which draw parallels to today include:
- Heightened tensions between the United States and Germany
- Conflict and strife in Syria including major fighting in Damascus and Aleppo. This was primarily due to Britain and allied forces – similar to the dynamic in play today.
- Many regions bordering Russia fought for Independence including Ukraine and Lithuania
#3 The Shadow King

Donald Trump was born in the middle of 3 eclipses.
As Trump was being born in the United States, a lunar eclipse began to unfold on the other side of the globe. Solar eclipses occurred on the new Moon 14 days before his birth, and on the subsequent new Moon 14 days after. Essentially, Trump was born in the shadow of shadows. The two agents that caused these 3 eclipses, the North and South node of the Moon were transiting a mere 2° (degrees) from his natal Sun and less than 1° from his natal Moon. The Moon (ruler of the mind, subconscious and emotions) is in a very strange condition in the birth chart of Donald Trump, for it is experiencing almost every possible astrological extreme the Moon could find itself in. It is simultaneously debilitated, full, eclipsed, fortified with directional strength (dig bala), and is being aspected by Mars and the Sun – the foremost planets which represent fire. Lastly, the eclipse occurs just a couple degrees away from not only Trump's ascendant, but the star Regulus as well. An eclipse simultaneously casting its shadow on a country and the ascendant of that country's leader is enough to cause concern, but that same eclipse occurring just a couple degrees from the constellation of Regulus indicates an impending chaotic instability overshadowing America and the Trump administration.
#4 Mars Rising
Trump is often a rather feisty and combative fellow. This is because a quick-tempered Mars sits a mere 3° from his ascendant in the fiery sign of Leo in his natal chart. This lends him a predisposition to react in a quick, sharp and defensive manner. The eclipse that occurs on August 21, 2017 is hemmed in between his ascendant and natal Mars position just 2° away from each natal degree. Out of the 360° degrees of the zodiac, when a transit or key astronomical combination occurs within a few degrees of a constellation or an individual’s natal position, it is considered to be very potent and likely to display its effects in a pronounced manner. Furthermore, during the eclipse on August 21, 2017, Mars will be debilitated and transiting through the venomous star of Aśleṣā. Moreover, it will be transiting within 3° degrees of the shadow maker Rāhu and 7° from the eclipse. Mars is also in an almost perfect trine to transiting Saturn, and Trump’s natal Moon and South Node.
This becomes especially important since a debilitated Mars, and the heliacal rising of Sirius dominate the dawn for two weeks leading up to the eclipse.

Shadow Dragons
The Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka are interlinked and within 2° of the Shadow Dragons (Rāhu and Ketu) in Trump's natal chart. This indicates that not only are Trump’s ascendant, ascendant lord, Moon, and Sun intricately linked to the Shadow Dragons, but his Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka as well. This points to an individual with an insatiable appetite for foreign and domestic wealth, as well as an unquenchable thirst for power and status, all coupled with an uncanny fascination with foreigners

Gaṇḍānta
The North node causes the eclipse from the gaṇḍānta portion of Cancer. This indicates pretty serious border skirmishes regarding land and water boundaries. The location of debilitated Mars with the eclipse causing node indicates military battles over land boundaries. China represents the zodiac sign of Cancer according to some older manuscripts, and Leo represents portions of Turkey, Syria and India, so these countries may be involved with border skirmishes. As Donald Trump appears to be a big fan of walls and borders, we can expect a whole new enthusiastic chapter to commence on his part regarding borders, walls and immigration.
#5 Mercury Retrograde & The Leo Eclipse
Mercury retrograde cycles are an opportune time for us to reflect on the shadows cast by our words and the words cast by our shadow. Unfortunately, it usually brings up the lack of awareness we often employ when expressing ourselves. Mercury retrograde cycles that accompany eclipses usually indicate that the words we use to express ourselves in both verbal and contractual form are difficult to reverse and have more longevity than your average Mercury retrograde cycles. Government censorship and disinformation become particularly pronounced when these combinations occupy the sky.
The eclipse on Aug 21, 2017 occurs in Leo. One of the most notable eclipses linking Leo in history accompanied the fall of Darius.

From China, to India and as far as Iran you can find an overwhelming amount of customs and old sayings that recommend keeping pregnant women away from the light and shadows of an eclipse. In some parts of India, even pregnant cattle were tied to their stalls and not let to roam into the light or shadows.
#8 Food
One must not eat food during the eclipse of the Sun or the Moon ~ Viṣṇu Smṛti
in the Mādhavīya, Gautama recommends that no food may be consumed in the period beginning four praharas (12 hours) prior to a solar eclipse, or three praharas (9 hours) prior to a lunar eclipse. This restriction excludes children, older ones and those who are suffering from illness. – Śikṣāpātrī Bhāṣya
The light and shadows of an eclipse should never touch food and water for ingestion.
#9 Holy Water?
When the Moon is eclipsed by Rāhu ( lunar eclipse), all charity made is equal to the gift of land; all brahmanas are like Vyāsa, and all water becomes like the Gāṅga. – Padma Purāṇa
Though wells and drinkable water are covered during eclipses, one can witness folks bathing in rivers and lakes throughout India when an eclipse is active. Several passages from different ancient books indicate that water becomes imbued with a special quality for bathing and rituals during an eclipse.
#10 Charity
Dāna given on the day of pūrṇimā associated with the star of that month is ten times more fruitful. Śraddhā performed on yugādi and manvadi days is also similar in value. Dāna during āmāvāsya is 100 times more fruitful. Done in the evening is 1000 times more fruitful. If done during viṣuva it is one lakh times and that Dāna given during solar eclipse is limitless. –Yājñavalkya

Long ago, eclipses were an auspicious & lucky sign because for a few brief moments the extreme masculinity of the Sun is transformed into the divine feminine. The earth and plants rejoice as they absorb this rare feminine solar essence. – Dhatri
